Travel Vaccines For Oceania and Australia
Travel Vaccines and Advice for Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Micronesia, or Tonga

The recommended travel vaccines and medicines depend on many factors such as the traveler’s immunization history, itinerary, length of stay, and current medical conditions. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. At North Vancouver Travel Clinic, our consultation approach is to educate and inform you about all possible health cautions pertaining to your destination(s). We help you make informed decisions regarding each vaccine, travel medicine, or supply based on your risk, travel activities, and budget. This is the advantage of our clinic.

As part of our thorough consultation, we will ensure you and your loved ones are up to date, if necessary, with routine vaccinations such as measles/mumps/rubella (MMR), Tdap, polio, influenza, etc. Below is a list of potential travel vaccinations for Oceanian countries:

Hepatitis A: The virus is transmitted through food and water. The vaccine is recommended for all travelers to Fiji, Micronesia, Tonga, and Vanuatu.

Hepatitis B: The virus mainly spread through contact with infected blood, semen, or other body fluids. Recommended for certain travelers or for all travelers going to areas with a high prevalence of the virus.

Typhoid: The bacteria is transmitted through food and water. The vaccine is recommended for those traveling to Fiji, Micronesia, Tonga, and Vanuatu.

Rabies: Rabies is transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. The risk exists from dogs and other terrestrial animals in some areas of these countries. Our clinic nurse will inform you whether rabies pre-exposure series is recommended for you based on your itinerary.

Japanese Encephalitis: Japanese encephalitis is a viral disease spread by mosquitoes that primarily affects parts of Asia and the Western Pacific. The virus mainly circulates between mosquitoes and birds or pigs, but it can infect humans, causing inflammation of the brain. While many infections are mild or without symptoms, severe cases can lead to neurological damage and are potentially fatal. Vaccination is highly recommended for travelers to endemic regions, especially if they plan to spend a lot of time outdoors or in rural areas.

Cholera and ETEC E. coli: Transmitted through food and water. See the "traveler's diarrhea" section below.
Yellow Fever: See below.

Other Health-related Concerns

Yellow Fever Risk and Vaccination Requirements: There is no risk of yellow fever in Oceanian countries. Travelers do not need a yellow fever vaccination certificate unless arriving from a yellow-fever risk area. The North Vancouver Travel Clinic expert will inform you whether you need the certificate if you are traveling from a yellow-fever risk country.

Malaria Risk and Prevention: The risk of malaria is negligible in most areas of these countries. Our travel specialist will inform you of any outbreak or malaria-risk areas that might be part of your itinerary.

Traveler's Diarrhea: Up to 50% of travelers to a developing country will experience some form of diarrhea. This occurs as a result of ingesting food and water that contain a pathogen, leading to a localized infection of the intestine. At North Vancouver Travel Clinic, we will prescribe and provide you with an appropriate antibiotic to carry with you for self-treatment in case of a severe infection. Additionally, we will provide tips on food and water safety.

High Altitude Sickness: High altitude sickness is not generally an issue for this part of the world.

There are other diseases and health concerns that travelers should be aware of, such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, pollution, and traveler’s diarrhea. Be sure to book an appointment with our experienced and certified travel specialist. Rest assured that we will work with you to tailor our recommendations to your precise needs based on your travel itinerary, risk level, cost concerns, etc.
